Club History

A handful of hearty Saluki Lovers gathered on a snowy January day in 1977 to form the Garden State Saluki Club. The Club was incorporated in the same year.

Meetings are held within an approximate 25-mile radius of the Somerville area.  Match Shows are held at least annually Saluki breeders usually are asked to judge. As a club we support the entries at two or more point shows, and hold a least one annual Specialty, encouraging the use of breeder judges at these events. In addition we provide hospitality and a luncheon at our events for all Salukites present.

A newsletter, the Oasis, is published quarterly. This contains articles on all phases of saluki ownership; show, obedience, coursing, and best of all companionship.

Handling classes for breed and obedience and coursing practices are held as demand and practicality allow.

Awards are given annually to members who attain titles on their dogs in breed, obedience, or field.

Periodically the club sponsors trips to Specialty events. Members have traveled caravan style to Saluki Club of Canada events in Ontario and to Saluki Club of America events in Chicago, Ohio, New York, and Kentucky. We have also trekked to art exhibits, mid-eastern events, and to support sister clubs in New York, Chicago, and Maryland.

We have standing committees in addition to the Match and Oasis. Our trophy committee works feverishly gathering artwork, as well as classic silver and other trophy items. The hospitality group doesn’t just throw food together. The meals generally have a theme, Eg; Middle Eastern Dinner, Hunt Feast, French Cuisine. Everything from appetizers to desert is true to the spirit of the occasion, including musical accompaniment. Thankfully our rescue team has not been hard pressed, but are at the ready.

Our Club’s purpose, in addition to preserving the breed, is to provide a friendly atmosphere for Saluki owners to gather. We encourage newcomers and veterans to join with us so we can all benefit from our daily experiences with our beloved hounds.
